The Great things about Drawing Prompts
I’ve been using drawing prompts with kids for years, they’re magic! Not "keep the kids busy for 10 min while I do chores" kind of magic (although yes, that too), but the kind that actually builds creative thinking, confidence, and self-expression.
The way I design my prompts, they can be as simple or as adventurous as your child wants them to be. Some kids are happy to just grab pencils and draw. Others might turn the idea into a full blown sculpture, collage, painting, or even a performance if you let them!
They’re not just colouring pages (although they totally work for that). They’re open invitations to create.
For example, a prompt like:
“Create a Weather Machine That Controls Sunshine, Storms or Rainbows.”
Sounds fun, right? Your child might draw it first… but then start rummaging through the recycling bin to build it. Suddenly, you’re gluing bottle tops & cardboard tubes together, and it’s a whole collaborative project.
These prompts can turn into:
Drawings
3D sculptures
Cardboard inventions
Story writing
Dramatic play
Mixed media collages
Paintings or murals
…really, anything!
Drawing prompts help kids:
Think creatively - instead of copying, they’re imagining and inventing.
Explore their ideas - through drawing, building, storytelling… whatever form it takes.
Make connections - between drawing, play, and real-world materials.
Share their voice - even the shy ones light up when you ask, “Tell me about this.”
I created these prompts to make space for that kind of play. The kind that’s messy, imaginative, and open ended. No pressure, no “right way,” just a nudge to get started.
Whether your child wants to colour quietly or turn your living room into an art installation, the prompt can be the spark. And that’s the magic of it!
