Easy Sun Catchers for Kids - A Fun, Messy Art Craft with Recycled Materials
Looking for a bright, hands-on art activity that kids will love? These DIY sun catchers are a hit at Messy Art Preschool! Using cardboard frames, sticky contact paper, and loads of colorful textures, this craft is perfect for ages 3+ and offers endless creative possibilities.
What You’ll Need:
Recycled cardboard (for frames)
Clear contact paper
Tissue paper & cellophane
Glitter, confetti, sequins
Hole punch & yarn or string for hanging
Optional: watercolour paints to decorate the frame
How to Make It:
Create Your Frame
Grown ups use a box cutter or scissors to cut out simple frames from cardboard. Any shape works - squares, circles, or even seasonal outlines (like hearts or suns).Stick the Contact Paper
Tape contact paper to the back of the frame, sticky side facing up! This becomes your "canvas."
3. Add All the Sparkles
Invite kids to stick tissue paper, cello, glitter, and sequins onto the contact paper.
Some may go wild; others will be more intentional, both are beautiful!
4. Paint the Frame (Optional)
Once everything’s stuck, kids can paint their cardboard frames using watercolours to finish off their creations.
5. Punch & Hang
Use a hole punch to make a spot for yarn, and hang your sun catcher in a sunny window. Watch it glow!
